Outlook and upcoming Projects
The next short-term goal of UWAKIKI is to build a second classroom for 40 pupils before the end of 2005. This building will ensure constant, endurable lesson conditions. After school the room will be used for further education of UWAKIKI members. Additionally, a sewing group will be founded.
In order to realise these steps, an application for financial help was made to the Nord-Süd-Brücken Foundation.
A further plan is to extend the activities, adding to the basic education work:
- maintenance of a permanently employed teacher and her/his further education
- improved assistance for the foster families of the orphans
- facility of kitchen for the enrolled pupils
- supply of housing and a full-day care for orphans
- precaution and solution for transparent and beneficial teaching and learning
- increase the sign-up rate at the preschool
- let UWAKIKI serve as prototype for similar projects and ideas in the region
The long-term goal is to build a Orphanage Centre. It shall accommodate 120 young people, improve the teaching and health conditions. It will not be reserved for preschool pupils but also help older children aged 12 to 18 years, e.g. in acquiring technical abilities.
The centre will contain several classrooms, offices, workshops, a conference room, medical ward and further accommodations for the pupils, so they can spend the whole day at the centre.
The ground for the Nursery Centre has already been bought for around 3000 Euros. The much higher amounts for building the centre (ca. 160.000 Euro) have not yet been collected.
Problems
- deficiency of classrooms and lesson material
- insufficiently qualified teachers
- permanently growing number of orphans needing UWAKIKIs help
- no continuous financial support
- lack of accommodation and day care for the orphans
- poor food supply
